Illegal subletter living abroad told to pay over £81,000

ree

Back in October 2019, during a routine repairs call, our suspicions were raised about an illegal sub-letting in one of our properties in Lambeth. Subletting is when a resident is charging someone else to live there under their own terms, often for a huge profit.

We immediately investigated the issue and found out that the established tenant had been living abroad for many years, in a home he owned, but was still claiming benefits in the UK. He even contacted us asking us not to seek possession of the property, as he needed the tenancy to be able to claim his benefits.
