Every stolen tenancy is a stolen opportunity for a family in need
With around 1.3 million households waiting for social housing and over 120,000 families living in temporary accommodation, the impact of tenancy fraud is more than just financial, it’s deeply personal.
Tenancy fraud is the second-largest cause of local government fraud losses in the UK. Yet, detection rates have declined over the last decade due to funding cuts and reduced investigative capacity.
🔍 Case Study: Sub-letting: A two-bedroom council flat in London was being sub-let for £1,800 a month while the legal tenant lived abroad. The fraud was uncovered following a tip-off and a joint investigation with housing officers. The property was recovered and reallocated to a family who had been in temporary accommodation for over a year. The council saved thousands in temporary housing costs and prevented further unlawful profit.
Tackling tenancy fraud isn’t just about enforcement, it’s about freeing up homes for those who genuinely need them and protecting public funds.
