Day 3 - TFF International Fraud Awareness Week Campaign

Fraudsters adapt—so must our defences

Tenancy fraud continues to drain public resources and deny homes to those in genuine need. With £42,000 saved per case and 50,000 homes lost, the stakes are too high to ignore.

Here are five practical tips to strengthen your approach:

  1. Verify tenant information thoroughly - Use robust checks at application and review stages to prevent false claims.

  2. Educate staff and tenants - Awareness is key—training frontline teams and informing tenants helps spot red flags early.

  3. Encourage anonymous reporting - A public tip-off led to a £40,000 unlawful profit order in one case.

  4. Utilise data tools and technology - Cross-departmental checks and national data hubs significantly improve detection rates.

  5. Engage with community programmes - Joint working between boroughs and housing associations has led to successful recoveries and prosecutions.

Tenancy fraud is evolving, but so are the tools to fight it. Let’s share knowledge, strengthen partnerships, and protect our housing stock.
